May 22nd – Heritage Talk #4 Architect Extraordinaire W.C. Knighton 6-8pm

Bob Clay joins us to talk about notable Oregon architect W.C. Knighton and some of the iconic structures he designed in Salem and across the state. Come and see images of his wonderful work as well as tour the home he built for Dr. Luke Port now known as Historic Deepwood Estate.

Bob Clay, AICP, (Biographer, Oregon Architect, William C. Knighton, 1864-1938), began studying the art and architecture of Oregon architect William C. Knighton more than 20 years ago. In 1985, Bob purchased a 1907 Arts and Crafts home designed by Knighton, located in the Kings Hill neighborhood of Portland.

In 1987 the home was designation on the National Register of Historic Places. Bob was also instrumental working with neighbors to create the Kings Hill National Historic District in 1991.

When Bob learned how little was known about Knighton’s importance to Oregon’s architectural heritage, he set out to unveil this work. Using online digitized database archives, historic photos and interviews, he strives to bring Knighton’s legacy alive.

The extensive research of Knighton’s work reveals an era of handmade buildings whose craftsmanship and lasting beauty was achieved by Oregon’s finest carpenters, masons, and stain glass artists. He uses Knighton’s legacy as a window into Oregon history and the building boom that followed the 1905 Lewis and Clark Exposition.

Our office has made a commitment to developing drawing ‘models’ for our building projects that can then be transitioned into 3-D views. The development of more complex projects often requires the full use of BIM (building information modeling) to handle the coordination of all of the subsystems within the building projects. 3-D animation views can be supplied on projects to assist in the understanding of complex design problems and the corresponding solutions.

Forging relationships in the development of our projects is at the core of our design practice. Our Owner/Architect relationships assist in providing enhanced design solutions to our clients’ specific needs. We listen and thoroughly represent our clients in all aspects of the design process.

Carlson Veit Architects, P.C. has a solid reputation, not only for architecture design and technical capabilities, but also for our ability to provide close personal attention to our clients and their projects. Our firm offers a wide range of architectural and interior design services. Craig Carlson, Chris Veit, and Mike Junge have year of designing pleasing and functional buildings within established budgets and schedules. We have developed the staff depth and technical capabilities necessary to provide complete design services for the most demanding projects. We are a service oriented firm committed to assisting the project team with complete resolution of our clients’ requirements and challenges. In addition to new building design, renovation and remodeling projects have been a consistent part of our work load. Numerous projects for public and private clients have involved complete building makeovers as well as interior renovations. Project challenges include seismic and other upgrades designed to meet new codes, ADA compliance, and construction phasing within occupied spaces. Carlson Veit subscribes fully to the Standards of Ethical Practice of The American Institute of Architects. We welcome the opportunity to team with owners, tenants, and contractors in new construction, renovation, and maintenance projects.
